Mambazham Pulissery/Mango and Spiced Yogurt Curry

Mambazha Pulissery/Mango and Spiced Yogurt Curry

Mambazham/ Mango Pulisherri is a sweet and spicy curry made with ripe sweet mangoes. It is an old-fashioned recipe still made and served in many homes in Kerala. Whenever I get ripe mangoes, I cannot resist making mambazham pulisherri. It is absolute comfort food and goes well with steamed rice. Cooked mangoes are mixed with cumin flavored yogurt to make this delicious curry. There is a beautiful balance between the sweetness of mangoes and the sourness of spiced yogurt. The heat is from the green chilies and red chili powder and the earthiness from turmeric, fenugreek seeds, and cumin. Does it sound simple? And yes, it is a simple curry. If you are on a time crunch, this is a perfect recipe for you.

Pulisheri is the most common yogurt-based dish in Kerala cuisine. Pulisheri is made both with vegetables and fruits.  Ripe sweet mangoes make delicious curries like pulisherri, pachadi, or manga curry with coconut paste. Freshly ground coconut paste, cumin, curry leaves, and coconut oil add aroma and taste to this curry.

There are a few mangoes that are selected for this curry.  If you are lucky to get Kerala naatu manga, chandrakaran, kotturkonam, or moovandan variety of mangoes, try using them to make pulisherri. The flavor of these mangoes are very unique. Pulisheri is also part of Kerala Sadhya. Sadhya is a hearty vegetarian feast with rice and curries and is served on all festive occasions. Try this delicious sweet and sour curry with mangoes, and let me know how it turned out for you :) Happy cooking!

Mambazham Pulissery/Mango and Spiced Yogurt Curry

Ingredients
Ripe mangoes-4-5 small sized mangoes
(or two medium sized cut into cubes)
Yogurt- 2 cup
Grated coconut- 1/2 cup
Green chilly-2
Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp
Chilly powder- 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek powder- 1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds-  1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds -a few
Chopped shallot- 1
Whole red chilly-1
Curry leaves-2 springs

Peel and cut mangoes into large chunks. If you are getting the small variety, then you can peel it and use it as a whole.
In a saucepan, put mangoes, chilly powder, turmeric, salt, and one cup of water. Cover and cook till mangoes get cooked, and it becomes a little creamy and thick.

Grind coconut and green chilly into a fine paste using little water and add to the mango mixture, stir and cook in medium flame for two minutes. Do not allow it to boil and switch off the flame. Blend fenugreek powder and yogurt and add to the cooked mangoes. Simmer for one more minute in low flame.

Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. When mustard splutters, add shallots, red chilly, and curry leaves and fry.  Allow getting slightly brown. Pour this over the curry, mix, and cover with a lid till it is ready to be served.

Thanks to you, I can probably borrow this recipe from you and try to recreate the dish for Dad... Good job!!! :)

Thalashery Chicken Biryani

Chicken Biryani is very important for festive occasions in Kerala. Different styles like Kozhikodan Biryani, Malabar Biryani, Thalashery style, Kayees Biryani famous in Central Kerala especially Cochin....the list goes on and on..... This recipe I had noted in my recipe book some time back  from a TV show. Talasherry Biryani ingredients are not much different from the usual Kerala styles, but the preparation and taste is definitely unique. In the ingredients you will find a total absence of curd and chilly powder. The rice I has used is long grain basmathi rice, as I did not have the smaller variety which is actually used in this biryani. Give this recipe a try..you will surely feel the difference. Ingredients For the Rice Basmathi Rice- 3 cups Salt to taste Cloves- 5 Cinnamon 1 inch tick Cardamon- 3 Ghee- 1 tsp Rose water- 2 tsp Water- 6 cups For the masala Chicken- 2 lb Onions thinly sliced- 6-7 medium Tomatoes- 4 medium Ginger - 2 inch thick peice Garlic- 1...

Kerala Chicken Curry/Home Style Chicken Curry

Kerala Chicken Curry Spicy chicken curry is a great accompaniment with rice, appam, or chapati. This chicken curry is an old comfort food recipe, simple and straight forward and you will never go wrong with this. It is a simple, easy chicken curry but tastes delicious. The flavor of earthy spices, onion tomato- masala, and coconut milk all melding into one another, to make rich and aromatic chicken curry. This home-style chicken was the first chicken curry that mom taught me. My mom is my food hero, and sometimes she got this wildly experimenting streak which drives my dad crazy, but I enjoy it the most. So let me call this home style, standardized regular curry, which she makes every Sunday. Now when I’m feeling extra nostalgic for homey taste, I make this chicken curry.  It goes well with almost anything-naans, chapatis, ghee rice, fried rice, or with freshly baked bread.   Coconut milk adds flavor and a touch of sweetness to the curry. If you like, you can add s...

Spiced Pineapple Pickle- Kerala Pineapple Achar

Spiced Pineapple Pickle- Kerala Pineapple Achar Pineapple pickle is a delicious pickle, fresh and bursting with tropical flavors. Pineapple pickle has a sweet and savory combination and adds a zesty kick to any meal. Do you like sweet and spicy pickles?. I love pickled, salted, and fermented vegetables and fruits . It is easy-to-make condiments and a must-have in my kitchen. My family favorites are sweet and savory pineapple chutney and spiced pineapple in salted brine. Salted pineapples are good on sandwiches, fish tacos, or roasted meat. The best part of this pickle is that you can use it just like chutney or salted pineapple. The pickle is for those who love to take the spice level a notch higher. Pineapple pickle is a tongue-tingling sweet, tangy, mildly spiced pickle. It is delicious, and the flavor and taste are irresistible. It can be paired practically with everything, but it is best with parathas and naan. This recipe is from my mother-in-law. Sweet and sour pickles a...
