Olan

Olan

Olan is part of Kerala Onam sadhya. It is a very simple recipe which sounds just like stew. Vegetables like ash gourd, pumpkin and red gram are cooked and finally simmered in coconut milk. It is a mild but very flavorful dish with simple seasoning like green chillies, coconut oil and curry leaves. You can also use black eye beans in this recipe.

Ingredients
Ash gourd- 200 grams
Vanpayar/ red gram- 1/3 cup
Green chilly-5
Curry leaves - 2 spring
Coconut milk thin- 1/3 cup
Coconut milk thick- 1 cup
Coconut oil- 2 tsp
Salt to taste

Soak red bean for two hour and cook with one and a third cup of water till it is soft and keep aside.
Peel and chop ash gourd into small pieces or thin slices (You can also add pumpkin).
Cook this along with green chilly and salt and 1/3 cup of thin coconut milk. When it is cooked and soft add cooked red gram or vanpayar and thick coconut milk. Simmer in low flame for a minute and add curry leaves and drizzle coconut oil on top.

Try this..
Hope you will all enjoy..

  29. Thanks all for stopping by and for the sweet comments..
@ SinFoodie it is not kidney beans but a smaller variety..its is called vanpayar or red cowpeas/red chowri..it looks similar to the oriental red beans(azuki bean) but a little more larger..

Kerala Black Halwa/ Karutha Halwa/ Rice Flour Halwa

Kerala Black Halwa/ Karutha Halwa/ Rice Flour Halwa December has finally arrived and it means it is almost Christmas time! How many of you look forward to the Season of Joy! My birthday also comes in December, so it is a double celebration for me :) How is the Christmas planning coming along for everyone? It is exactly three weeks for Christmas and I am planning to share a few recipes for the holidays this year. This is the first one I wanted to share with all of you -Kerala style sweet delicacy- a real nostalgia, the Black Halwa. Halwas has always amazed me with its simplicity, unique texture and taste. It is a gel-like sweet candy that you can never stop eating. When making halwa there is a time-honored cooking technique and halwa making is time-consuming. So people simply prefer to buy it from the shop. But making your own is a rewarding experience. Now many of the traditional sweets are forgotten or get overlooked for fancier ones in bakeries. But that is not the case w...
